Trip to Tom Malloy's Race Car Collection 2021
Saturday Jan 16 Apx 30 brave 'gear heads', with masks & social distancing, visited a private collection of racing memorabilia. We started with breakfast at Brandon's Cafe in Corona, then made a caravan to see the collection.
The owner's father founded Carrell Speedway in Gardena. Tom's father was the owner of early 50's cars that raced at Indy, and Tom was right along side as a young boy. While now a successful owner of Trench Shoring, Tom spent many years actually racing some of the cars, even shipping them to race at Goodwood in England. His collection includes a 1906 Locomobile Indy car, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of 1981 Indy, and other Indy cars through the decades. Also are sprint cars, midget racers, and many extremely rare vehicles. The 'other building' has many other interesting "less famous" cars. Afterward we had a 'party sub' lunch at Dennis Martinez' house and enjoyed looking at his collection of trucks and projects.

South of downtown LA, a succession of tracks, including Southern Ascot (in South Gate, 1937-42), and Gardena Speedway (1947-1957, above), eventually led to the hallowed Ascot Park, also in Gardena, located within a stone’s throw of another predecessor, Carrell Speedway (1940-1954), whose site is now occupied by the Gardena-Carson YMCA. The site stood vacant for many years as part of route preparations for the extension of the Artesia (91) Freeway into the South Bay, which never occurred.
